DEFINING THE PROBLEM!
|
Reading is fundamental to our education and our understanding of the world around us. However, we often take it for granted, especially those of us who CAN read!
Parents naturally expect their child to learn to read. Children are anxious to attend school. If you ask them why, they always answer, “I want to learn to read.” 70% of them do, but 30% do not. Can you think of any situation where a 30% failure rate is acceptable?
These children struggle, fall behind and fail, repeatedly. A very humbling, frustrating experience for anyone. Some become hostile toward their teachers and classmates. Others withdraw or fall into depression. All feel they are flawed or stupid because they haven’t learned to read. Of course, it’s not true!
Often these problems are not obvious until the 3rd or 4th grade. Frequently, the issues are not dealt with until the 8th grade or later. Then the parents panic, or worse, they give up.
The “System” labels “problem students” because they don’t know how to help them. Many parents are told, “Billy will never learn to read” or “Sally has a problem that prevents her from learning”. It is tragic and totally untrue in most cases. Remember, eighty years ago, everyone in the United States learned to read without difficulty. IT IS IN THE METHODOLOGY.
In fact, all children CAN learn to read, write and understand English. We use explicit, systematic, Multi-Sensory techniques and Socratic instruction that teach to each child’s strongest learning mode. Our process isn’t difficult and it’s not new! It’s a unique combination of 21st century technology and 19th century technique. The children learn!
More important, they succeed! Self esteem returns, frustration vanishes and behavior improves. They become self-confident independent learners.
Even gifted students, who read well, dramatically improve with Multi-Sensory instruction. It helps them use all of their learning senses and improves comprehension. Try it! They will be glad you did. |
